How Fast Are The Kids Driving?
You may worry about how fast your kids drive the car. Here's a simple-to-install device to help track just that. It might help with car insurance, too.
To know how fast your teen is driving, buy Davis Instruments "CarChip." It can be purchased from discount retailers and websites (like www.sears.com) for about $100. The CarChip can be plugged into most cars built after 1996 using no tools. The only cars it won't work on are a handful of 2003 models that use the CAN computer protocol. These vehicles include certain Ford pickups, GM Saturns, Mazdas, and Saabs. Go to www.davisnet.com to learn more about the CarChip, and ...

What's in the Oscar Baskets
Count on the Oscar's to dig up what's cool and what's hot in the world of fashion and trendy technology.
Once again, it's that special time of year where we use the power of Internet search engines to figure out what the lucky celebrities will be carting home from the Oscars. After a few complaints last year that I included too many items that were not in the Official Academy Awards Presenters and Performers Gift Basket, my list this time only includes those items that specifically claim inclusion from a news source or press release. Thus, it's shorter than before ...GirlHacker has a complete list. Follow the link to see it.

See-through Toaster
Most of the time here at "A Consumer Reports", we like to feature links to sites where a consumer reports on a recently purchased or favorite product. But this see-through toaster is so cool, we're just posting it. Unfortunately, this is just the prototype. The company is looking for a manufacturer.
A toaster made of glass, which celebrates toasting in a glowing and shining way that makes us look forward to enjoy a fresh piece of toast. At work, he shows himself and at the same time he explains how he works. He neither hides the bread, nor its preparation. In this way it is possible to receive him as an idyllic little light. He stages the bread and the way it gets toasted, which is accompanied by warm light ...

Car Budgeting
When you buy a car, make sure it fits in your budget. In general, cars are poor investments, but you probably need one to get to work and shop. Make sure to consider used cars and lease-returns. Cars have become much more reliable, so you can drive a high-end car for a lot less if you don't need the latest model.
How much should you spend on a new car? Not more than 20 percent of monthly income, say experts. "This includes payments on all the cars you may own, whether you have one vehicle or six," says Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief at Edmunds.com. "And we're talking about your take-home pay, not your gross income."
Even if your home is paid for and you have few monthly bills, the basic rule still stands.
"By and large, cars are terrible ...

Credit card payments by mobile phone
Very soon, cell phones and other small objects will be able to make credit card payments using RFID technology, simply by being held close to a payment terminal.
Often called "contactless payments," the technology involves swiping an enabled cell phone, key ring or other small item near a point-of-sale terminal. The capabilities, which use RFID-like near-field wireless technology, are starting to gain momentum in Japan and are undergoing tests in the U.S. and Europe. Credit card companies have endorsed the technology.
McDonald's restaurants are expected to adopt the system in North America this year.

Teach Kids About Credit Cards
Prepaid credit cards are a good way to teach kids how to use credit cards responsibly. Here's one example.
Hello Kitty will turn more plastic than ever by staring on a MasterCard debit card.
"We think our target age group will be from 10 to 14, although it could certainly go younger," said Bruce Giuliano from Sanrio.
Since only parents (or at least anyone older than 18) can sign up for the card, Hello Kitty thinks it's a great way for adults to "help teach their children how to manage their finances." Next up, is a ...

Predatory Mortgage Refinancing
Sub-prime lendors sometimes target financially strapped home owners for predatory mortgage refinancing, a practice in which homeowners are pressured to refinance their mortgage with a loan that has excessive points, fees, penalties of interest rates. Most mortgage brokers do not use these tactics. For those who do, certain states have begun to take action.
Joining a growing number of states in the battle against predatory mortgage lending, Massachusetts enacted a strong anti-predatory lending law earlier this week. The new law passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and with the endorsement of both mortgage industry trade groups and consumer and civil rights advocates.
Among the law’s significant provisions:
Triggers strong consumer protections for loans with fees greater than 5%. The law establishes a comprehensive definition of points and fees to remove the incentive ...

Buying a Washer and Dryer
These consumers write an entire report on their adventure to buy a washer and dryer. They eventually consulted with ePinion and Consumer Reports, but they did a lot of their own investigation, too. Here are some things they found out about that you might not learn from reading the consumer guides.
Some interesting facts if you’re looking for a new washer or dryer:
* Most front loaders automatically adjust water levels based on what is in the washer
* You can get your washer and dryer in fancy colors that cost extra
* Your electric company might give you a rebate if your washer is an Energy Star compliant model
* High efficiency washers (most front loaders and some top loaders) “work better” with low suds ...

Cell Phones and Husbands
A consumer reports on the process of buying a phone and how she came to realize her cell phone was a metaphor for her husband.
As I pondered the various types of cell phones and the features, I had a realization: husbands are like cell phones. How is this so? With cell phones (and their calling plans), you can't get exactly what you want. You can't pick and choose exactly the features you want at the price you want to make the perfect customized-for-you phone with calling plan. And you can't do that with a husband either.
A wise woman once told me: ...

Financial Planning
Financial planning can start with a pen and a piece of paper. Eventually, you might decide to use a software package like Quicken to help organize everything although, as this consumer reports, a spreadsheet may do the job. Don't forget to learn about life insurance, mutual funds and other financial investment vehicles.
I've been meaning to do it for a long, long time. But there are always more interesting things on my radar. After updating my copy of Open Office yesterday I started working on a few simple spreadsheets that will greatly improve my understanding of my financial situation. For far too long now I've been making educated (often overly optimistic) guesses based on back of the envelope calculations without the benefit of an envelope.
I suspect that a lot ...

Taking Prescription Drugs on Time
Many people have to take prescription drugs throughout the day. This article talks about a simple SMS application that would send a reminder to your cell phone every time you needed a Paxil or a Vioxx (are you still taking that?). You can set that up yourself if you know how to program a computer by sending email reminders to your phone. Maybe the service will be available online someday soon.
The Growth of SMS Text Messages Capacity for Learning: Outside of the U.S., SMS is a highly and widely used feature of mobile phones. People can use their phones as network devices to be notified of restaurant reservations, pharmaceutical reminders, just in time content notifications and other elements. Watch for SMS to extend to a wider set of self-service transactions for workers and consumers. Hopefully, the U.S. will catch up.

Toyota Prius Mileage
Consumer Reports provides a good explanation of mileage ratings and why Toyota Prius mileage is lower than EPA ratings suggest.
Good article on Wired today about this.
Drivers rarely see the actual EPA-rated mileage in the real world, according to John DiPietro, road-test editor of automotive website Edmunds.com. DiPietro says most drivers will get between 75 to 87 percent of the rated mileage, with individual variations based on driving habits and traffic route. "If a new car gets less than 75 percent of its EPA rating, then it should be retested."

Investing Guides
This is a nice article on where to get financial advice including an out-of-print Consumer Reports guide.
Investing is just one aspect of personal finance. People often seem to have the itch to try their hand at investing before they get the rest of their act together. This is a big mistake. For this reason, it’s a good idea for “new investors” to hit the library and read maybe three different overall guides to personal finance - three for different perspectives, and because common themes will emerge (repetition implies authority?). Personal finance issues include making a ...

Microsoft Media Center
PVRBlog gives a consumer report on the Microsoft Media Center. For the entire review, press on the link above.
Thomas Hawk has a great, lengthy review of the new Microsoft Media Center 2005, which he expected a bit more from, but it does sound like Microsoft's making some progress on it.
Highlights from the review:
* It only does over-the-air HDTV, but that's not entirely MS' fault. The cable and satellite folks have their own proprietary encryption schemes they're not into sharing with anyone.
* MCE will be available for purchase as a standalone product for the first time, instead of requiring you to buy a new PC. Could be a support nightmare for MS, but good on them for expanding the availability for build-it-yourself geeks.

WASHINGTON - Consumer Reports will begin comparing the effectiveness and cost of a few types of widely used prescription drugs, giving consumers the same type of analysis now provided on such items as refrigerators and cars.
Unlike the nonprofit publisher’s other products, the Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs Web site, to be unveiled on Dec. 9, will be free.
Certain states already receive such drug-by-drug comparisons so their Medicaid managers can make decisions on which prescription drugs ...
