PSP Pixel Problem

consumer reports psp dead pixels Sony's PlayStation Portable may have a problem with dead pixels.

The other day, Brian told me that I shouldneed to get a Playstation Portable.

However, as Penny Arcade notes, the PSP suffers from a problem which is annoying gamers: dead pixels. Of course, Sony has responded to the gripes; but, I don’t know if I want to drop two hundred dollars on a game system that might have an annoying technical problem which will require my sending the unit to Sony and being without it for a month.

Devices Help Find RFID Tags

Consumers are concerned that RFID tags on products they buy will be read even after they leave the store. Here's a report on some consumer devices to find RFID tags.

Many consumers have privacy concerns about radio frequency identification tags (RFID) that will eventually replace barcodes on products. For example, readers outside of a store could identify what you are carrying by picking up the tags’ signals. Now a UK company is promising to help consumers find and kill those pesky tags with their RFIDwasher.

Another device is the TagZapper — a small handheld device that “zaps” or deactivates RFID transmitting devices. Tagzapper has been developed by US-based West End Laboratories to be a light weight, handheld, device for deactivating RFID transmitting devices, preventing thus RFID readers from performing scanning and tracking of people or goods.

These products will be available by the end of 2005.

Microsoft Launches Mobile Video Downloads

consumer reports microstoft tv This new video service from Microsoft is a kind of portable TV.

The service was previewed in January at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, showing how users can download specially formatted content to their PCs and then transfer it to devices running Windows Mobile software. For the final launch the service has been updated to allow subscribers to select specific content to be downloaded each day, Microsoft says. Users can also turn on an automatic deleting feature that vets files according to how long they have been stored on their PCs, it says.

Blockbuster Settles Suit

consumer reports blockbuster store Blockbuster settled a suit related to its "no late fees" advertisements.

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer today announced a multi-state agreement with one of the nation’s largest movie rental chains, settling allegations that it misled consumers in an advertising campaign.

Blockbuster, Inc. settled investigations commenced by 47 states and the District of Columbia and agreed to provide clear and conspicuous disclosures about its "No Late Fee" program and to issue refunds to thousands of consumers who have paid "re-stocking fees" or were charged the full cost of a video.

The Attorneys General alleged that the advertising campaign launched in late December 2004 was misleading because it failed to clearly disclose that, seven days after a movie or game’s return due date, the consumer would be charged its selling price if the item were not yet returned. Thereafter, if a consumer returned the rental, he/she would be credited for the selling price, but would be charged a "restocking fee" of $1.25 or more.

consumer report instantaneous water heater Armstrong has added to their line of tankless water heaters. This report helps consumers with specifications.

Armstrong International, Inc. now offers a complete line of Instantaneous Hot Water Heaters. The Flo-Rite-Temp water heater utilizes steam as the heating medium. It is designed for applications such as; change-houses, washdown stations, process water, hospitals, etc. Flo-Rite-Temp utilizes the feed-forward principle of control thus eliminating the need for temperature sensing devices normally associated with a storage tank type system. The blending valve mounts directly on the heat exchanger thus eliminating the need for connecting piping.

iPod or iRiver H10?

consumer reports iRiver music player iRiver is trying to challenge iPod's dominance of the handheld music player market. Consumers might want to check out this alternative. Here's a report.

Late last year, Reigncom put out the iRiver H10, a five-gigabyte HDD model, after 10 months of research and development, to challenge Apple’s iPod mini. Weighing 100 grams and about the size of a business card case, the iRiver H10 can store up to 1,200 songs, 200 more than the iPod mini. It is equipped with a 1.5-inch color liquid crystal display (LCD) screen, so that users can look at digital pictures or read e-books while listening to music. At the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates named the iRiver MP3 player as an outstanding product. Reigncom says its primary goal is to break Apple’s dominance in the MP3 player market.

Composting Primer

consumer reports compost bin This consumer reports on how she started composting and her adventures in vermiculture.

Piper owns a little business called Hawai’i Rainbow Worms through which she teaches composting workshops to her fellow islanders. Vermicomposting is about letting worms eat your kitchen scraps. Ever the tree-hugger, I’ve been wanting one of those big, plastic backyard composters for a year now, but have been reluctant to spend the 150 bucks to buy one, particularly in a year when I was too busy choosing bridesmaids’ dresses to bathe my dog or dust the furniture, let alone tackle any major landscaping projects. So I was excited to see how a real pro uses worms to turn used paper towels and papaya rinds into rich feed for plants.

Cingular Wins, Er, Loses

consumer reports cingular customer service Cingular Wireless wins for worst customer service.

Cingular Wireless and Redmond-based AT&T Wireless, which merged late last year to form the nation's largest cellular carrier, together had the worst complaint record in 2004, according to information obtained by Consumers Union and released yesterday.

What's more, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. had the worst complaint record for two consecutive years, according to the data, which was obtained from the Federal Communications Commission through the Freedom of Information Act.

The total number of complaints filed about wireless phone service increased 38 percent: to 29,478 in 2004, from 21,357 in 2003.

"The staggering increase in complaints is further evidence that reform is needed in the wireless phone market so consumers can get a fair shake," said Janee Briesemeister, senior policy analyst for Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, in a prepared statement.

Home Cooking is Cheaper

consumer reports home cooking Having read that eating out is expensive, this intrepid consumer reports on the following dining experiment: 5 days of eating out versus 5 days of home cooking. Home cooking is much cheaper.

I decided to conduct an experiment. For five working days, I ordered out breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then for the same length of time I prepared all of my meals at home.

In neither case did I eat extravagantly. Dinner on Friday night of the “out” week, for instance, was two slices of cheese pizza ($4), and Friday of the “in” week was rotini pasta with marinara sauce and a salad ($2.42).

The difference in cost was remarkable. In the first week, I spent $83 for takeout and delivery. I spent only half as much to make food at home the next week.

Part of the reason was sales tax. I paid 8.625 percent on most takeout and delivery food but almost nothing for groceries, which are largely tax exempt in most states.

FCC Irony

consumer reports voip old fashioned phone The FCC has ruled that phone companies do not have to sell "naked" DSL, or DSL without POTS (plain old telephone system) included. This consumer reports on the economics of paying twice for phone service. Of course, consumers can get their IP connection from cable or satellite providers and cut out the phone companies all together.
Now consider the irony of the situation. In New York City, Verizon is offering me the ability to buy internet telephony for $30/month through by DSL broadband connection, for which I'm paying $30/month. Now, if as a rational consumer, I now wish to disconnect my analog "old phone" line from Verizon, to save anywhere from $20-30 a month, Verizon is fully empowered under the new FCC rules to disconnect by DSL broadband and internet phone! Talk about a Catch-22 to make Joseph Heller proud!!

Toaster Recalled After Starting Fires

consumer reports kitchenaid toaster starts fire Consumers who bought a KitchenAid toaster may want to unplug it. Or buy a fire extinguisher to accessorize it.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Friday recalled KitchenAid toasters after reports the heating element can suddenly self-start, posing a fire risk.

Whirlpool Corp.of Benton Harbor, Mich.,, was voluntarily recalling both the two-slice and the four-slice models of their KitchenAid ProLine Toasters.

Whirlpool has received three reports of incidents with the toaster unexpectedly self-starting.In one case outside the United States something on top of the toaster caught on fire, but there were no reports of personal injury or property damage.

The toasters, which were sold between August 2003 and January 2005, retailed between $250 and $300.

Clear Wire Blocking Vonage?

consumer reports operators phones Not clear yet whether Clear Wire is blocking Vonage calls or, if it does, whether the impact is significant. Just in indication that VoIP telephony is still in its infancy. This VoIP consumer reports:
One Vonage customer has claimed that his calls have been blocked by Clear Wire, Craig McCaw’s fixed wireless start-up. Gerry Salemme, an executive vice president at the Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire, told Advanced Pipeline that “some technologies used by Vonage and other VoIP providers are problematic for wireless networks, versus a wired network.”. Salemme also confessed that he had not read his company’s terms of service. So one cannot take him too seriously. Vonage officials are clearly unhappy. However Clear Wire is not a phone company or a cable operator, so going to FCC isn’t going to help much. As a word of caution, since this is an isolated case, its time to take a little pause … after all one swallow doesn’t make a summer.

Swimming Pool Maintenance

consumer reports pool maintenance This report really helps consumers understand the costs of operating a pool, whether you plan to install a pool or already operate one...

The principal expense in maintaining an Endless Pool is the cost of heating the water.

During installation, the pool should be well insulated. We recommend at least 2" of foam insulation board be added to most installations. For additional savings in colder climates, the pool can be super-insulated with up to 6" of rigid foam.

Health Care

consumer reports health care system broken This consumer reports on the structural problems in U.S. health care that need to be fixed.

Unfortunately I don't have a "quick" fix for our health care situation. However there are in my view, two main structural problems with health care today, setting aside all issues of medial ethics for the nonce. The first is that the incentives of the current system are all structured wrong. Cost incentives are insulated away the consumer. For the insurance company it is only in the short term interest for them to keep costs down. Long term, for them the higer the costs, the better.

The second problem structural problem is rooted in our limited resources. We have far more capability in our medical technology than we can provide for each patient. Therefore we must ration our care. How? By lot? Or by ability to pay? But how we ration that care is studiously ignored by our politicians and most of our pundits.

Consumers Want HDTV

consumer reports hdtv Consumers want high-definition television according to this report.
Nearly half of all consumers plan to make their next television purchase a high-definition (HDTV) television set, according to a new consumer survey released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today. The survey results reinforce CEA’s market research projection that total digital television (DTV) unit shipments will surpass analog television sales for the first time in 2005, based on the “digital tuner mandate” issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The first time that dollar sales of digital television surpassed analog television was in 2003.

I’ve been playing Ridge Racer on it ever since I got home, and giggling at how ridiculously good it is. Car Insurance Premiums Increase Slowly

consumer report car insurance premiums Car insurance premiums will increase in 2005, but at a rate lower than inflation.

Nationwide, the cost of auto insurance is expected to rise by just 1.5 percent in 2005, the smallest increase in five years, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

The average cost for auto insurance nationwide for 2005 is estimated at $870, an increase of $13 per vehicle from last year, reports the I.I.I. The projected increase represents a continued slowdown from 2004, when auto insurance costs rose by just 2.8 percent, said Robert Hartwig, senior vice president and chief economist of the I.I.I.

“The price of auto insurance is increasing by little more than one-half the rate of inflation,” Hartwig said. “Many people who, for example, drive safe cars, have excellent safety records and good credit-based insurance scores may see their rates go down.”

Hartwig cited the declining number of auto accidents, safer cars, new auto theft technology and fraud-fighting efforts as key factors behind the trend.

Every time we come up with something we think is *so* cool, our trusty tipsters trump us. Today’s tip: the Vortex hand-crank blender, which some believe is a better product than the Lehman’s one we featured yesterday. We’ll leave that up to you to decide, but here are the Vortex’s vitals: compact add lightweight (it’s base stores in the pitcher for convenience), made of Lexan, two-speed gear system works as an ice crusher or a food processor, and an ergonomic hand-crank. Hee haw. Thanks for the tip Brian B! At $69.95, it’s cheaper, too.

Robot for Future Scientist

consumer report robot kit If you know a future consumer who might be a scientist or inventor, maybe this new robot kit from Radio Shack would be of interest. Here's a report:
The electronics retailer's new Vex Robotics Design Systems is actually more than just a neato $299 robotics kit for hobbyists. It's intended to fill a gap seen at Segway Inventor Dean Kamen's hugely popular FIRST national high-school science competition. For the uninitiated, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a now 16-year-old program that not only encourages high-school students to learn about science, technology, engineering, and robotics but engages them in regional, national, and even international robotics competitions that resemble major sporting events more closely than science fairs

Buying a Used Car

consumer report used car lot Consumers can save money by buying used cars. This Brit reports on how consumers can protect themselves when buying used.
By purchasing a used car you can save a lot of money. You could buy a model that you may not be able to afford brand new. However, buying a used car is still a bit of a gamble as there is no guarantee that the car has not been in an accident, has real mileage, and was properly maintained. There may be some hidden problems like a worn out automatic transmission, or engine problems that may not have been obvious when you test-drove the car. Here are some essential facts you should consider before buying a second-hand car so you won't regret your decision after your purchase.

Avoid Diet Plan Scams

consumer report diet scams Diet plan scams play on common consumer desires to lose weight quickly. This report tells consumers why the scams work and how to avoid them.

Denise Bruner, MD, MPH, FASBP is a specialist in weight loss, and a fellow in the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. She shares one of the major reasons that weight loss scams flourish today: “We live in a society today that wants immediate gratification. This is reflected in our willingness to buy from those that promise ‘instant results’”.

The increasing obesity in our society, and hopes that weight loss can be achieved without lifestyle changes fuels the growth of frauds. Bruner states, “In the U.S., currently 61% of the population is overweight, and the numbers are going up. There’s a huge market out there for weight loss products. After all, it appeals to us to find out that you can ‘Lose 30 pounds in 30 days.’ We don’t want to have to deprive ourselves of our favorite foods, and want something that will ‘magically’ absorb the calories.”

RFID and Consumer Privacy

consumer reports rfid implant This report focuses on RFID privacy issues for consumers.
As the technology behind RFID advances, the potential for privacy infringement does as well. A more recent development is a study which reveals that RFID already has the capability to determine the distance of a tag from the reader location. With such technology already available, it is not difficult to imagine a situation in which retailers could determine the location of individuals within their store, and thus target specific advertisements to that customer based upon past purchases. In effect, that store would be creating a personal log of your past purchases, your shopping patterns, and ultimately your behavioral patters. While such information gathering would be considered intrusive enough by many consumer's standards, the danger that such information could be sold to other retailers, (similar to the way such profiles are currently sold regarding internet commerce), could create potentially devastating information vulnerabilities. While some RFID critics have pointed out that the technology could lead to some sort of corporate 'Big Brother' there is a more widespread concern that allowing RFID to develop without legal restrictions will eliminate the possibility for consumers to refuse to give such information to retailers.

Sling Media, Inc., and Texas Instruments (TI) today announced that the companies are working together on the newly introduced Slingbox Personal Broadcaster, the groundbreaking product from Sling Media that won numerous awards at the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show. Bad Car Deal

consumer reports used car salesman This consumer reports on a disappointing car deal. The sales rep said a used car warranty would cover any problems with the car, but the finance guy said different. Don't expect extended warranties to solve basic problems with a car.

Need a new car, or at least a car that is new to us. Saturday we found one that we liked & could afford. That model year has some reliability issues according to the research we did, so the sales guy offered us a bumper-to-bumper warranty & included it in a price that he quoted us.

Tonight we go back there to sign the paperwork, & the finance guy says that the sales guy is new & doesn't know what he's talking about, & that the included warranty is a manufacturer certification only, covering drivetrain only (not the gizmos that break) & that the full warranty we though we'd been promised would cost another $2000.

We walked, of course, but we're somewhat disappointed to have been baited and switched, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Based on my experience, if the sales person promises something, the cashiers should honor it......

The need to defend consumer's fair use rights, preserve innovation and redefine the nature of the debate over protecting intellectual property dominated the keynote presentations and panel discussions during the Consumer Electronics Association's (CEA) new IP and Creativity Conference: Redefining the Issue, held Wednesday in Washington, D.C. The conference attracted more than 200 representatives from the consumer electronics, technology, content creation, broadcasting, video game and cable industries along with top government officials.

The theme of the day was set in the opening keynote delivered by CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. "The technology industry, the media and the policymakers, have given the content community a free hand in defining the issues of how technology affects creativity," Shapiro stated. "The content industry has been flexible, clever and ruthless in defining the terms of the debate. I submit it is time we recast the discussion and change the language of the debate."

Make Room for the Refrigerator

consumer report refrigerator installation When you buy a new refrigerator, remember to measure the space in which the refrigerator will fit and any doorways between the delivery truck and the refrigerator space. This consumer reports what went wrong at the doorway.
We still don’t have a refrigerator. The second one that came proved to have case parts that extended beyond the width of our doorways and couldn’t be removed, contrary to what the salesman had told me when I went, tape in hand, to pick out a fridge that would fit. We “fired” that appliance store and are now proceeding with a new two-part plan. First, I’ll get my crowbar and remove some of the trim from the offending doorway so we get another inch or two of room. Second, I think we’ll try Sears. From what our next door neighbor told me, their installers seem likelier to attempt creative solutions to get appliances into rooms.

EPA Award for Green Friendly Appliances

consumer report energy star logo For the sixth consecutive year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) have recognized the Northeast ENERGY STAR® Appliance and Lighting Initiative with an award for outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by bringing ENERGY STAR to communities across the Northeast.

The Northeast ENERGY STAR Lighting and Appliance Initiative is a coalition of electric utilities and energy efficiency organizations that is coordinated through Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP), based in Lexington, Mass. Martha Cleans Refrigerators

consumer reports refrigerator cleaning In this blog comment, this consumer reports how meticulously Martha Stewart's staff researches such topics as cleaning a refrigerator.
I’ve always found Martha extremely reliable. If you want to, say, clean your refrigerator, someone from her staff will have talked to several major refrigerator manufacturers, people who clean refrigerators for a living and representatives of refrigerator-cleaning products, did every available bit of reading on the subject, tried out different methods on a few dirty refrigerators, then sat down to write advice on the subject that would be difficult to improve on. And anyone who thinks this is counter-feminist is living in some dream world where refrigerators clean themselves.

Buying a Subaru Forester

consumer reports subaru forester The consumer reports on the decision to buy a Subaru Forester.

It's not quite identical to the one in this picture -- it doesn't have turbo so there's no hood scoop, and it doesn't have the picturesque villa or lady -- but it's roughly the same body style, same color, and it has the big sunroof. Moreover, it's basically the same length as the little tiny Neon (which should make it easy to parallel park in Boston), the compartment in the back should be big enough for me to throw my bike in (and if not, it comes with a roof rack), and hopefully the mileage should be a bit better than the Neon was able to manage.

And everything works!

It would have been nice to get something that got better mileage, like a hybrid or diesel, but there's said to be a year long waiting list for the Prius around here, and -- I learned yesterday -- it's currently illegal to sell or register new diesel passenger cars in Massachusetts because they don't meet the California air pollution standards. So much for the french fries & curry bio-diesel daydream...

So, the Subaru it is, and if it holds up, it'll be the Subaru for at least another decade. W00t!

It'll be nice to have a car I actually enjoy for a change... :-)

Universal iPod Mount

consumer reports universal ipod mount Many iPod consumers want to mount their iPods in their cars. Here's a report on a universal iPod mount product that should do the trick.
The only problem with Nyko's decision to release an iPod accessory called the Universal Car Mount ($29.99) is the natural disbelief it inspires: it can't really be universal, right? It probably doesn't work with some iPod, or with some car? Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised with the answers to both questions: it's a highly compatible and well-built iPod mounting accessory.

This is my Sunbeam toaster, still going strong after over a decade of toastie goodness. Happily handles crumpets and those big slices of bread from the delicious Vienna loaves I sometimes get at the bakery down the road. Yum.

Buying a Pink iPod

consumer reports pink ipod This consumer reports how she finally decided to buy an iPod.

But, my recent visit to eq-life sold me. Being the typical female consumer of a fairly high ticket item, I had:

* asked friends about their experiences with iPods,
* read stories like Michele's,
* done some research online,
* and talked with a few more friends, before I was ready.

The whole MP3 thing is new to me and I wanted to get lots of information and feel fairly comfortable that I would really use it (and make it worth the investment) before I handed over my debit card. It helped that there were no other MP3 players to distract me on the shelves at eq-life (editing product selection at retail stores is counterintuitive, but it really works for some women) and that the sales guy was right there to answer any last minute questions.

After moving to new house in Mountain View, I have to put heavy investment on Sony DVD Recorder, a boom box, toaster, vacuum cleaner, clothes iron and a thermometer for the house. I did not have the chance to research all the various thermometer & hydrometer sensor but I was at a sports shop and they are selling the Oregon Scientic Standard Thermo-Hygrometer with Clock for $39.90. Toaster Lessons

consumer reports sunbeam toaster story This consumer reports that the toaster the family bought 30 years ago was much better than the new replica.

My dad proudly told me the history of the toaster as if it were a St. Peter’s thighbone, and how amazed that after more than 30 years, it still worked fine. Sure it was a bit tarnished, but when my dad found that Sunbeam had decided to re-release this toaster (to capture some of the then-popular 50’s-retro demand), my father couldn’t resist and bought a new one. The old toaster was placed in a cardboard coffin and buried with our other relics somewhere in the garage.

About 4 months later, this new toaster broke, and we ended up resurrecting the old toaster from the garage.

Car Buying Advice

consumer reports lexus ls430 This consumer reports that car buying is all about trade-offs. Except, maybe, with the Lexus LS430.

Beth from Mutated Monkeys is looking for a car. She commented here that, "If I've learned nothing else today, it's that all of the cars I'm considering have some kind of downside."

She's exactly right. All cars do. Everything is a trade-off: reliability, economy, size, performance, equipment levels, price. So there's always a downside.

If it's big enough, it probably gets bad fuel economy. If it's fast, it probably isn't big. If it's cheap, it likely isn't well-made. And so on. It's a complicated matrix. No auto maker has managed to cover all the points. That would be the perfect car.

Of course, money is the one thing that can be traded-off for gains in all the other areas. Almost always. Some very expensive cars are spacious, fast, reliable, stylish and good in bad weather. Think Lexus LS430, for example. Not my first choice in that segment, but one I've never heard a bad word about.

Getting Rid of Red Wine Stains

consumer reports red wine spots It's a perpetual mystery of the universe: how do you get rid of red wine stains? Well, this consumer reports on two methods.

Mariquita's original posting on this topic still remains the standard in my mind: a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and blue dawn dishwasher detergent will remove red wine stains miraculously and permanently. (I am sad to report the number of times that we've relied on this tip in our household this past year.)

But I heard another suggestion this week on this same topic from a very reliable source, a professional chef -- apparently white wine removes red wine stains. But in case you want to tempt fate and the unlikely...not the reverse!

Diagnosing a Dishwasher

consumer reports diagnosing the broken dishwasher Sometimes it's hard to diagnose a problem with an appliance. This consumer reports on how her baby girl Amelia more than helped figure out the problem with the new dishwasher lights.

Tonight, she solved another mystery. We have a newfangled dishwasher, purchased after the old one leaked and cost us nearly $5000 in repairs (I was collecting repair quotes while I was in labor with Amelia! ugh) One of the great features of the dishwasher are green lights that glow when the dishes are clean. The green lights stay on until you open the dishwasher. So we've developed a system--we leave the dishwasher lights on, and we unload the dishwasher asap soon after opening it. If lights are off, we assume that the dishes are dirty.

Lately, we've noticed that the dishwasher lights are not reliable, and that the dishwasher itself is prone to stop in mid-cycle. Hmmmm.

Our suspicions were confirmed tonight when Amelia walked into the kitchen, reached up, and without even fumbling once, clicked open the dishwasher latch. The green lights went off immediately.

"Off!" she said to herself, satisfied. Then she walked away.

Keep It Simple

consumer reports clothes dryer Dr. Joe provides sound advice on whether consumers should repair or replace an appliance.

So I must be careful not to let my pleasure overflow at finding one of my core philosophies of life in the OR and elsewhere vindicated by the information in a sparkling article by Stephanie Cavanaugh on home appliances and the "repair v replace" dilemma.

Her piece appeared in last Saturday"s Washington Post Real Estate section.

Cavanaugh is a superb free-lance writer who contributes occasional pieces to the Post; she does an enormous amount of homework and background investigation, which adds great value and credibility to her articles.

For this story she interviewed experts in appliance sales and repair, trade associations, consumer nonprofit research groups, home inspectors, and ordinary people like me and you.

The gist of her findings: if you like something, get it fixed regardless of cost.

And if you want reliability, then buy appliances with as few features and options as possible.

Mustang Beats GTO in Comparison

consumer reports mustang versus gto If you're a consumer looking to purchase a muscle car, you might like to know that this reviewer prefers the new Ford Mustang to the new Pontiac GTO for many reasons.
The bang for buck factor goes hands down to the 2005 mustang. The V-6 model, pushing 246 hp can be purchased for less than 20k and the V-8 GT goes for around 25000 if you want one reasonably well equipped. However, the GTO goes for a much higher 33000. Given the difference or similarity (depending on how you look at it) in performance, the Mustang is the better value.

Vonage and Skype Growing Pains

consumer reports vonage customer service problems This consumer reports on problems with Vonage and Skype VoIP problems and blames it on growing pains.

Vonage is having problems with other phone companies. A few people have told me they have to wait too long for getting customer support, or have them address billing questions. Which is quite understandable since the company is growing faster than mushrooms after a monsoon shower.

Yesterday, Skype’s problems became buzz of the moment after C/Net posted a story. Which actually I think might have been inspired by this post by Neville Hobson, who posted problems with SkpeOut almost ten days ago. Many others have been bitching about this for a while over on Skype Forums. The problems are about billing and support services.

Problems With Skype International Calls

consumer reports skype logo international call problems This consumer reports recent problems with Skype's international call service called SkypeOut.

My wife is a big user of SkypeOut, the paid-for part of the Skype internet phone service. Using SkypeOut for making international calls to normal phones saves a small fortune on our phone bill (see this example).

We have family and friends in Costa Rica, so using SkypeOut to call there makes great sense for money saving compared to the cost in making a call with the normal phone service. You don't have to worry about peak rates or anything like that - same low price per minute whatever the time of day.

But all is not well in Skype land as my wife has been telling me.

For some time, she's been experiencing 100% failure in making calls to numbers in Costa Rica. Failure primarily in just being unable to connect at all and so not make a successful call. Yet a call does goes through if you make it from a normal phone.

Samsung Networked Refrigerator

consumer reports samsung refrigerator Samsung introduced networked refrigerators and other appliances last year. Analysts say the economics are right, but this report notes that consumers have problems with installation and question the usefulness of networked home products.

Despite the recent traction, the digital home faces major obstacles. Many consumers call into question the usefulness of products such as Internet-enabled refrigerators and other digital devices, not to mention their complexity.

Retail chain Best Buy is seeing returns of 15 percent to 20 percent on home-networking products, Baker said. That's high compared with the low single-digit rates for most other products.

Scented Bowling Balls

consumer reports bowling balls that smell good It's a pleasant surprise when an old time consumer product gets an upgrade. Now you can get scented bowling balls. This report say they might help you win, too!

Odors associated with bowling traditionally include smelly feet, cigarette smoke and beer. But what about grape, amaretto and cherry? One bowling ball manufacturer — Storm Products Inc. — is putting fruit and other popular scents into its mid- to high-end bowling balls, resulting in a steady increase in sales.

More than half the bowlers on the Professional Bowlers Association tour last year used them, including four-time PBA champion Ryan Shafer.

Shafer, who has a contract with Storm, said he may have won a match two years ago in Kansas City because an opponent was distracted by his black licorice-scented ball.

Vonage Support Problems

consumer reports vonage set-up bad support This consumer reports that Vonage support is unresponsive. However, when he called Vonage sales, he got his VoIP phone working

I called sales, got right through and got a second phone # to call. After 20 mins or so, I got connected with John. He was super helpful, took 90 minutes to find out that "Joe" had mucked with my box and corrected it.

Now that the MTA was connecting again, he changed my SIP port to 5065 to prevent any possible conflicts with iChat AV. I then called a vonage friend, uploaded files and it sounded ok. We then did a iChat AV while on the phone and that sounded ok. We then disconnected iChat and I uploaded a file, all fine.

Vonage Deal at Amazon

consumer reports voip vonage deal This consumer reports that buying Vonage hardware may come with some strings attached. Click for full report.
Amazon.com: Electronics: Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonage VoIP Internet Phone Service Starter Kit. Hot deal at the moment. The adapter is now FREE after rebate. But you should read the fine print before actually purchasing this item. Why? If you’ve read my previous post about Vonage and other VoIP service providers, they generally charge a de-activation fee if you don’t return the hardware. What, you say? I agree, it’s fine that you have to shell out money in the beginning for hardware, but to be charged almost the same amount of money for not returning the hardware is very dubious, in the least. At least with the cable TV company, you know what you’re getting into when they say “equipment rental.” Here, you’re essentially paying for the rental of the VoIP device upfront AND you get charged the fee immediately upon de-activation. The money only gets refunded if they receive the hardware within an allotted amount of time.

Water From Air

consumer reports water from air What do you get when you combine a de-humidifier with a water dispenser?
This one’s got both the whiz-bang and why-didn’t-I-think-of-that factors. Plug it in, and water comes out. That’s it. No lines to connect, no bottles to stick on top (spilling water all over the floor in the process). So where does the water come from? Somebody had the clever idea of combining a dehumidifier with a water purifier, so that instead of throwing out the pan of water sucked from the air, you can drink it. It may be a bit much for your kitchen at home, but it sounds perfect for every office cluttered up with huge water cooler bottles. It’ll produce 20 liters of water a day in 70% humidity, which is about the amount that comes in one of those fat-ass 5 gallon bottles, but without the waste or transportation emissions.

Toaster Oven in Flames

consumer reports toaster in flames This consumer reports on what happened when her Black & Decker toaster oven burned up.
we had a black&decker toaster oven which turned itself on and then burst into flames. we just happened to be home at the time, i actually watched the thing in its moment of betrayal. it wouldv burned the house down if we weren't home, i'm sure that was the plan. we called up b&d to complain, and they responded so extremely well... they actually sent out a representative the very next day to personally exchange the burnt unit for a brand new one. afterwards it occurred to me, sheesh, they've probably been sued up the wazoo for this thing, no wonder they were so anxious to take it away from us: but who cares, this current toaster oven, it's been a good friend so far.

Internet's Impact on Products

This consumer reports that the Internet is having an impact on the speed with which consumers can impact products and markets. He reviews a piece by Clay Shirky that says consumers are turning into "prosumers" on the Internet.
The problem with the conversation up until recently, Shirky argues, is that the conversation has been flowing only one way, with media outlets speaking to huge audiences with the sole intent of capturing their attention for advertisers. Those buyers have been unable to speak back with any appreciable volume other than through organized boycotts or class action legal recourses when things go terribly wrong. In fact, the only time buyers could or would speak back with any real voice was when they had been sorely wronged. This is what made it possible to reduce the buyers to a single role in the mass market model: consumer. Put into slightly different terms, people could say any damn thing they wanted to, as long as they kept on buying. Clay rightly argues that the Internet changes this by giving individuals the potential for a substantial voice that can reach just as many, if not more people than the traditional mass media broadcast model. The upshot is that consumers are out, because "in a world where an email address constitutes a media channel, we are all producers now."

Okay, the complaint. I live in a medium sized city in the Midwest. We are too small for Best Buy and Circuit City, but big enough for Office Max, Radio Shack, Wal Mart, Sears, . . . etc. When I need something at the last minute, technology wise, Office Max is generally the only game in town. We purchased a Canon i860 printer over the weekend. We have a Brother HL-760 laser that's been a good performer for many years, but we've been wanting to do some color printing. Mainly color graphics, but also some photo printing. We narrowed it down to the HP Deskjet 5650 and the i860.

Credit Industry Regulation

consumer reports choicepoint logo This Houston Chronicle article reports that consumers need protection from the credit industry.

Last year, nearly 10 million Americans were victimized by identity thieves using information maintained by companies such as ChoicePoint. According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft is the nation's top fraud complaint.

ChoicePoint executives, who dumped millions of shares of company stock in the weeks before the scandal hit, refer to the far-reaching security debacle as "crimes committed against ChoicePoint." If true, then ChoicePoint should try to contain and reduce the harm the crimes have inflicted on others. ...

More Dead Appliances

consumer reports tv repair This consumer reports on two appliances going kaput. He's waiting for the third. Check to see if your insurance will pick up the tab for repair.

Last Saturday our old television just faded to black while we were watching a video. This isn't a big deal because we recently bought a new TV, but it now leaves us with the quandry of whether to get it fixed or just donate it to a charitable organisation, assuming they would want it in the first place. It's an old 32" Sony, that's huge. Takes at least two people to move it. It's also 12 years old, so I ...

Tankless Task

consumer reports tankless water heater This consumer reports on the trade-offs between a traditional water heater and a tankless water heater.

Tank water heaters cycle on and off all day, keeping 30 to 50 gallons of water at around 120 degrees, but tankless units heat only the water flowing through them when someone opens a spigot. Because of such intermittent activity and the absence of a tank to corrode, tankless units tend to last 20 to 25 years, versus 8 to 10 years for a tank heater, according to the Energy Department.

Tankless heaters, essentially a labyrinth of heating coils ...

When Everything Breaks

consumer reports air conditioner This consumer reports on a weekend where everything seemed to break. Sometimes it breaks so quickly, you don't have time to research before you buy the replacement.

This weekend had the water heater go bad, the washing machine die, and a mouse get stuck in the draw fan in our air conditioner, throwing it dangerously out of balance and spreading yummy mouse guts all over it to rot and stink up the house.

Fun, fun, fun!

We bought a new water heater from Lowes, and brought it to the house. Disconnecting the old one, we discovered that it had been built into it's nook, then ...

Blockbuster Late Fees

consumer reports blockbuster logo no late fees This consumer reports that Blockbuster's "no late fees" advertising campaign does not apply to all Blockbuster stores. Also, this consumer explains the fine print in "no late fees".

Basically, it means after 8 days, you've bought the item. If you return it between 8 and 30 days, you will be credited back for the purchase, less "restocking fees". How a restocking fee is different than a late fee is beyond me, except it probably is alot less than the previously completely unreasonable late fees charged by Blockbuster. And these terms can change at any time. Excellent.

This is all mildly annoying, but what has really got me ...

Consumer Reports Car Edition

consumer reports car edition honda accord The annual Consumer Reports car edition hits news stands this week. The Honda Accord is winner again. The surprises were in reliability where the U.S. has gained against European makes and Hyundai's Sonata topped all 2004 models for reliability.

"Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo had more than their fair share of problems. Only Audi came out better than average," the magazine said.

"The most reliable brand overall is now Subaru, which averages eight problems per 100," Consumer Reports said. It noted that Honda Motor Co. Ltd., long a reliability leader, now averaged nine problems per 100.

The single most reliable vehicle in the 2004 model year was Hyundai Motor Co, Ltd's low-cost Sonata sedan, with a problem rate ...

Trip to the Dentist Office

consumer reports dentist office This consumer reports on how much a trip to the dentist's office has changed with new technology.

The words "See your dentist" have traditionally struck terror into many hearts. But it's not so bad anymore.

Modern technology has redefined the dentist's office from the ground up, Shapira said. "Everyone's trying to re-invent the wheel."

For example, you can now use a new electric toothbrush that incorporates a toothpaste receptacle. Touch a button to squirt your dollop of toothpaste onto the brush.

You can relax - really - in the dentist's chair now. It's been ...

I saw everything from $3,000 bar-b-que grills, to my friend's sod farm display. That's right, if you're going to build a house, you're probably going to need sod. They've got it at the expo. One item that caught my attention was a beautiful stainless steel refrigerator. This fridg featured a built in TV! I'm not making this stuff up. Ionic Breeze Suit Settled

consumer reports ionic breeze Consumer Reports claimed that the Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image did not work as claimed. Now Sharper Image is paying again.

The Sharper Image has agreed to pay the publisher of Consumer Reports $525,000 to cover the amount the magazine spent in successfully defending itself against the specialty retailer's libel lawsuit.

The settlement announced Thursday comes three months after a federal judge here tossed a lawsuit alleging the magazine printed false and malicious articles in 2002 and 2003 about the company's Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier.

Consumers Union has stood by its magazine's reports, which said its tests ...

The Apple Appliance

Apple Mac I loved this quote from a reader of Oliver Thylmann's blog. Actually, the whole article on Apple computers is interesting.
But that box is an appliance, not a computer. Or at least it has the true potential to be. And in the digital world, that puts them into the content business, because digital appliances are about content just as kitchen appliances are about food.... And it comes in white."

Organic Waste Composter

consumer reports composter If you compost at home, a consumer reports that this under-the-counter gadget will compost faster (one day!) and without smelling up the house.
It’s not a pretty picture (look left), but it is a pretty cool product. A new system form the Sharp Corporation can dramatically reduce kitchen about 92% of your kitchen waste in just 24 hours. How? This energy-efficient composter breaks down and “digests” organic food waste at room temp with its proprietary Composting Bio Mix--a blend microbes and yeast cells, which conveniently also suppress odors while they work via Plasmacluster Ions that inactivate airborne mold and effectively clean the air ...

Cell Phone Insurance

consumer reports cell phone insurance Insurance policies for electronics are generally not a good investment. In this case, though, the consumer reports that she knew the product was likely to break.
I'm bummed - it looks like I won't be able to get insurance for my Sidekick. Apparently you have to sign up within seven days of activation (for new customers) or ten days after switching phones (for existing customers), and I didn't know that when I bought the Sidekick on eBay. I didn't even know that insurance was recommended, but every website or discussion forum I've seen about Sidekicks has people mentioning broken scroll wheels, buttons falling off, etc. I ...

Ace Insurance

consumer reports insurance policy A consumer reports on the difficulty he had cancelling a policy from Ace Insurance for cancer insurance. Before you buy an insurance policy, it's a good idea to find out about the company that offers it.

When I decided to cancel the service, I found that they had no listed toll-free number, and the documents they sent me did not provide any information towards that goal. After googling and contacting them, they provided a long-distance number for customer support. I did not use that, and instead asked to be transferred from the only toll-free number they have.

Upon being transferred, I was promptly left hanging no less than 4 times for periods of more than ...

Get More of Your Credit Info For Free

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act lets you get more information about your credit than ever before. Below is a transcript of a television news report on how consumers can take advantage of this new law.

LAST YEAR WE REPORTED THAT THE CONSUMER GROUP US PIRG FOUND ERRORS IN 4-OUT-OF-5 CREDIT REPORTS. WE FOUND ERRORS WHEN WE INVESTIGATED TOO. SHERRIE McGREGOR FOUND 91-THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF ERRORS IN HER CREDIT REPORT. TABITHA JACKSON'S CREDIT REPORT CONTAINED PHANTOM ACCOUNTS AND NON-EXISTENT COLLECTION AGENCY ACTIONS. THAT'S WHY INCORRECT "SPECIALTY CONSUMER REPORT" INFORMATION NEEDS TO BE CHECKED.

A landlord might check a data base that shows which consumers skipped out on rent. And they might think it's you ...

Funny Animation From Consumers Union

consumer reports fda animation Consumers Union, the people who bring you Consumer Reports, put together this funny animation. Who woulda thunk? It tells you about problems at the FDA and what you can do about it.

Tell Congress to support the FACT Act, requiring drug companies to make public all the results of their clinical trials so we’ll know about potentially harmful side effects. And it must create an independent office of ...
