Problems With Skype International Calls

consumer reports skype logo international call problems This consumer reports recent problems with Skype's international call service called SkypeOut.

My wife is a big user of SkypeOut, the paid-for part of the Skype internet phone service. Using SkypeOut for making international calls to normal phones saves a small fortune on our phone bill (see this example).

We have family and friends in Costa Rica, so using SkypeOut to call there makes great sense for money saving compared to the cost in making a call with the normal phone service. You don't have to worry about peak rates or anything like that - same low price per minute whatever the time of day.

But all is not well in Skype land as my wife has been telling me.

For some time, she's been experiencing 100% failure in making calls to numbers in Costa Rica. Failure primarily in just being unable to connect at all and so not make a successful call. Yet a call does goes through if you make it from a normal phone.

I have been traveling around the world for the past year or so and I love Skype. No, it's not perfect. For one thing, you need a headset to make it work properly. But for a $20 dollar investment...it's hardly a big deal.

Sometimes calls are not quite as clear as I'd like but for the price, you can't beat it. I use SkypeOut a lot. SkypeOut allows me, for a small pre-paid fee to call from my laptop to any telephone, cell or otherwise, almost anywhere in the world. I have yet to find a place without service. Calls from my laptop to telephones cost less than .02 cents a minute.

I'm a little bummed to hear that Ebay has just purchased Skype for close to 3 Billion because they'll probably up the price to help pay for the company.

That aside, and considering that it is not yet a "perfect" technology, I love Skype and I know that in the near future, it will be the norm. It no longer makes any sence to have a "landline" and pay outrageous fees from big telephone companies. Skype turns the standard telephone paradigm on it's ear. Bravo.
