Really Affordable Housing
This consumer reports on affordable housing built from recycled and salvaged materials.
Houston, TX-based Dan Phillips builds homes out of recycled and salvaged materials. The homeowner participates in the construction, under the guidance of a professional builder. The homes are small and no-frills but (from what I can see in the photo) sturdy and cozy. The base size is 240 square feet, with an additional 100 square feet for each additional person.

Kenmore Appliances
A consumer looks at the Kenmore brand and its appliances.
Because of its excellent beginnings in refrigeration, Kenmore now makes all kinds of kitchen appliances, including dishwashers, stoves, ovens, microwaves, and more. You can even find a few small appliances, like toasters and blenders, under the Kenmore label. However, Kenmore quality production didn’t stop in the kitchen. Like so many other brands, Kenmore now also has a line of washing machines and dryers with long lifespan, reliability, and quality performance.

Household Chemicals
Consumers should check household products for perfumes, dyes, and other chemicals. Check this report.
The bottom line? Pay close attention to the beauty and household products your family uses. The perfumes, dyes and other chemicals in these everyday products cause skin irritations for many people. Try using chemical-free or dye-free products instead. There are more on the market all the time. I personally use ALL brand Free & Clear laundry detergent for my family’s laundry and I’ve been very happy with it. Remember, your skin is your body’s first line of defense!

It Sucks To Be An Adult
Most consumers like credit cards ... until the bill consolidation begins.
So, as I mentioned in my last post, Mario and I spent most of the day going through our bills (namely credit cards) to see which ones we could consolidate with the new, low interest rate credit card Mario got. We decided we’d pay off Home Depot, JC Penny, our JC Penny personal plan, which is how we got our wedding rings last year; Sears and the dreaded Capital One card. The only cards we’d have left would be Target and the new Visa.

Health Alert: Toxic Cheap Toothpaste
This consumer reports on Chinese use of diethylene glycol to save costs manufacturing household products.
According to a New York Times article, diethylene glycol was not listed on the label of the toothpaste found in the Miami store but the FDA inspected it because of the discovery in Panama of tens of thousands of tubes of tainted toothpaste made in China. It appears that “counterfeiters have found it profitable to substitute diethylene glycol for its chemical cousin, glycerin, which is usually more expensive”. Glycerin is known to be a safe additive which is commonly found in food, drugs and household products and in toothpaste, and is used as a thickening agent.
